Hyzerbomb Mortar One Disc Round Challenge

I have the privilege of travelling around the state of Texas for work, and while I am out and about, I try to schedule a little bit of time to check out a new disc golf course, and play with the locals. Earlier this year I went down to Harlingen, TX, located at the southern tip of the state, near Mexico. Dixieland Park Disc Golf Course has a few trees, and a whole lot of wind. I recorded my round with the Hyzerbomb Mortar while I was down there, and decided that today was the day to share this disc and all of it’s glory.

The Mortar is one of the few discs that I bag, and use routinely, that is not from Vibram Disc Golf. Since I have been throwing Vibram discs for a few years now, whenever I grab discs that are in Champion, or Star (or equivalent) plastic, they always feel really slick to me, and I feel that I do not have the control that want to have when I am throwing them. When I first picked up the Frontline-X Mortar from Hyzerbomb, I actually found the gummy-ness to be a great feel in the hand.

My brother, Nathan, invited me to play in the three disc Millennium Challenge in Austin back in October 2013. Hyzerbomb Discs was doing the payout after the round, so they allowed us to swap out a Millennium disc with one from Hyzerbomb that we could use during the round. Wanting to support the local Texas guys, I grabbed a Mortar and added it to a QMS, and Scorpius.

As I mentioned before, the Frontline-X plastic was super gummy. It feels awesome in the Texas heat (it may have been October, but that doesn’t mean it was cold outside when I got it), but maintains it’s grip when the weather cools. I am not sure if Hyzerbomb came up with this plastic mold and asked Innova to do it for them, or if Innova already had the GStar compound and Hyzerbomb was just the first use of it. (*** Mortar was released in “Fall 2013“, we received ours in October, and GStar was officially announced in December 2013.)

I could not throw the Mortar at all when I first got it, as it was so overstable, and not very beginner friendly for me, but I knew I could use it for specialty shots when I needed a strong hook left on shorter RHBH holes. I kept trying to release it with anhyzer to get it to go straight, but I did not have the arm speed or ability to use it at first.

Fast-forwarding nearly 2 years, and the Hyerbomb Mortar is still in my bag, (not the original one I got, but one of the backups) and gets a decent amount of use. As my overall disc golf form, disc selection, vision of the course, and experience improved, I realized that a beefy overstable mid certainly has it’s place in the world. I can throw much farther than when I first received the disc, so I have considerably more control with the disc now then I did when I first got it. Big headwind shots under 275′, I use the Mortar. Big spike hyzers: Mortar. Skip shots inside of 225′, you guessed it: Mortar.

The Mortar is a beadless Gator. An old out of production disc from Innova. I do not mind beads on my putters (small ones at least), but I do not like them on discs when I drive. When I lost my original Mortar in a local league round, I purchased a Gator as a replacement, and it was not the same feel in the hand. (It was also regular Star plastic which was slick feeling, but our local pro shop did not have Hyzerbomb, or GStar Gators.)

If you are a newer player, or someone that cannot throw with a lot of power, the Mortar would probably just be a very specialized disc that could be used on occasion. As throwing speed and power increase, this disc could see a lot of action in a players bag. I am glad I stumbled across the Hyzerbomb Mortar when I did, and that I stuck with it long enough to figure out how to use it appropriately for my game.

Check out the One Disc Round I had where all I used was the Hyzerbomb Mortar.
