Chase Disc Golf Driving Videos – Technique Review

Nathan, our fearless leader in the Austin chapter of the Disc Golf Underground, has been doing some serious overhaul on this form and technique. If you have been following his thread on Disc golf course review, if has been entertaining, and insightful. He started off recording himself with multiple drives, and then posted it to the world for ideas on increasing distance, improving form, and developing better accuracy. Nearly 6 weeks later, the thread is still going strong, and it is evident that Nathan is making some serious gains in his progress, as today’s video showed a 290′ stand still drive with his orange Opto Pure, from Latitude 64.

Last week when I was in Austin, I was able to meet up with Nathan, and we played a round at Old Settlers Park, mixing holes from the traditional course and the winter course. I asked him to video me a few times on the tee box, so that I could see what my form looked like, and so that we could solicit the great advice from some of the technique and form specialists on DGCR.

Here is a video of some of my drives:

A few things that were pointed out regarding my form:

  • ” He could plant a little more closed to get a further reachback and also delay reaching back a little longer.” – Sidewinder22
  • “I would put money on the fact that he could take all but the last 3 steps out of the skip thing and be more accurate and get the same distance.” – HyzerUniBomber
  • “Early reach back” – New013

Here is another video from OSP with Nathan:

I have never really thought about the mechanics of my throw, even though I have watched a lot of videos about form, and technique. It seems hard for me to think when I am doing my x-step and throw. “Feeling” the brace, snap, and torque just kind of happens. Since that conversation on DGCR though, I have gone through a lot of videos and pictures that I have on my computer from different disc golf outings, and trips, and I was able to find another video that I took for form purposes. This is what my form looked like in February 2013:

In February 2013, I was barely able to get over 320 consistently. I could do it, but it felt like my mid-range, fairway, and distance drivers all went the same distance. Even though I know there is a lot of room to go with my form, it is good to see the gains that come from practicing, and listening to others. Nathan is a student of the analytic side of disc golf. He can analyze and critique the different parts of his throw, and as we talk about what he is learning, he is able to guide me in a better direction, helping me to improve without getting “paralysis by analysis.”  Now, even though there is more that I can improve on, it is fun to look back and see what changes have happened in the last 18 months or so.

Who knows what the next 18 months will bring.
