Disc Golf Resorts Mexico – Puerta Vallarta

My wife and I had the chance to take a vacation to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico this past weekend. While we were there we did the traditional “Gringos in Mexico” tourist activities including long walks on the beach, sunsets from the balcony of the hotel, fish tacos, and bumpy bus trips to name a few. Since I have an awesome wife that indulges in my disc golf addiction, we made sure to bring a few discs in order to check out one of the few disc golf courses in Mexico.

Disc Golf Resorts Mexico is currently a 9 hole course located just north of Puerta Vallarta, near the Vista Vallarta Club de Golf. The course was founded by Dan, a Canadian by birth, that moved to Puerta Vallarta with a dream to create a manage a world class level disc golf course. Additionally, Dan does a great job of spreading the joy that comes from playing disc golf with others, and is in the process of forming disc golf leagues among the local school system in Puerta Vallarta.

The course was a lot of fun, and you can tell that a lot of love, passion, and hard work has gone into it. Even though it is not permanent course at this time, there is a lot of potential to have the current 9 hole layout to expand. There is talk of 27 holes (3 sets of 9) that will hopefully come about in the near-ish future. The course defiantly falls into the category of a short, finesse course in its current configuration, but there are plenty of options for a fun safari layout that includes killer views, and bombs.

My wife played the first round with Dan and I, and she had a good time (especially since she is not really a disc golfer). She opted out of the second round, so Dan and I could go through the course faster, and so that she could rest. The course makes great use of the land that has been allocated by the owner (Dan is borrowing the property, so a $10 entry fee goes to play the course to pay permission to use the land). Nothing is free in Mexico, and it seems like this is the going rate to paying the Mexican landowner where the course currently is.  Dan has mentioned that he is looking for a new place to move the course, as there has been some drama due to land values, possible hotel/resort people purchasing the current ranch where the course is located, and the current activity going on with neighboring properties.

The course is a fun one, though it is certainly not a course that rivals the destination courses in the States. Given the circumstances in Mexico, in a common vacation town, and the ability to brag to your friends about playing disc golf in Mexico, it is a great little escape from the traditional Mexican tourism activities and a good time. I would make the time to play the Disc Golf Resorts Mexico course again if I ever end up in Puerta Vallarta, and I hope that Dan is able to fulfill his dream of creating a championship caliber disc golf destination resort in Mexico. He certainly has the heart to pull it off.

Since it is fun to throw far, I wanted to see how close I could get from hole 8’s tee box, to hole 9’s basket. Huge shot, down hill, with a crazy view of the beach and city in front of us… as fate would have it, I parked it for the tap in 2… less than 5 feet away from the basket.
