Legacy Discs Fighter Test Flights and One Disc Round of Disc Golf
Battle of the Aces

I like testing out new discs, recording their flight patterns, and trying to see how they compare between companies, plastics, and molds. Yes I am sponsored by Vibram Disc Golf, and yes I throw rubber 99% of the time, but at this stage of the game, there are certain slots in the flight chart that Vibram has not filled. Companies like Innova, Dynamic Discs, and Discraft make great discs, and there is a lot to chose from. Being a small business owner in real life, I like to try and support the “little guys” when I get a chance, so I have an attraction to Legacy Discs, and look forward to testing their stuff out when I get the chance. Even though I do not throw plastic very often, if I ever got the urge, I would probably throw Legacy just to support the underdog.

Needless to say, I recently purchased a Legacy Discs Battle of the Aces player pack so that I could give the new disc a test run. Last year I hosted a BotA event in Houston, and we had a really hard time filling it so I did not offer to run one again this year. The 2016 BotA disc is known as the Fighter. Online, there were mixed reports about the flight, with some people calling it a beef stick, while others said it was less stable than a Firebird. I was not sure what to expect, so I brought it with me on a business trip this week, along with a GoPro HERO 3+ in order to give both the disc and GoPro a shot.

Most of the videos that I have made to date have been on my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and it allows me to set it to Ultra High Definition (3840×2160). This then allows me to zoom in more effectively when I start using the video editing software on the computer. The problem with this, is when I fly, and then do my work stuff, by the time I get out to the course the battery on my phone will not allows me to record a full round. Additionally, when I am out and about, I do not have the tripod that holds my phone for recording purposes. I was hoping that the GoPro would be the solution to this problem, but after creating these videos, it is very apparent that the GoPro is not the camera of choice for disc golf.

This is the video where I tried to record various throws with the disc:

In addition to attempting to showcase the disc flight, I also recorded the round on the 9 hole course where I only used the Legacy Fighter. Every throw, approach, and putt.. only the Fighter. The disc was certainly more stable that I was expecting based on the mixed reviews online. There is a rumor that Legacy will be releasing a disc called the Enemy in the near future, and it has been described as crazy overstable. The people that were talking about the Fighter made it sound like a straight flying disc when comparing it to the Enemy, so I assumed that the Fighter would not be that bad. I was wrong. The 174g Icon Fighter that I threw was very similar to an Innova Firebird, or Latitude 64 XXX. The closest thing I bag to the Fighter would be a Vibram Solace, but even that is not a good comparison, as the Solace is a speed 13, and the Fighter is probably closer to a speed 10. It is more overstable than the Vibram Notch (I carry two) as well.

The rim thickness felt great, as it was not too wide, or too deep. Even though I carry a Solace, I almost never use it due to it being so wide, and hard for me to control by not being able to grip it as well as I would like. The Fighter is a better fit in my hand than the Solace, and since it is more OS than my Notch, I could see it possibly going into the bag. The speed 10-11 slot is in my wheel house of where I like to throw discs, and hope that Vibram starts putting some molds in that section of the flight chart.

The Legacy Discs Fighter would be an excellent headwind disc, and it looks beefy enough to fight through anything. It also looks like a great Firebird replacement for anyone that wants to support a smaller disc golf manufacturer, instead of the big guys. Regardless of if I ever put it in my bag or not, it will probably have a special place emotionally for me since I aced hole 7 at Gypsey Park in Corpus Christi, TX with it during my video round. It was fun to watch, and record.. even though it was on the GoPro Camera. Feel free to check out the footage below:
