Rain or shine, sleet or hail, the Disc Golf Underground Christmas Tournament must go on. With a week’s worth of rain to saturate Agnes Moffitt Disc Golf Course, the forecast was looking grim for our annual Christmas Tournament, yet many dedicated Houston disc golfers showed up to compete for bragging rights, and custom dyed disc golf trophies.

Round one was our team event, a 3 headed monster format. Each team of three players would tee off, like a normal round, but the team mates would then pick which drive to use. The curve ball to the game was that each player had to record 6 drives in the 18 hole round. On some holes the traditional “best ball” was taken, while on others birdie opportunities were passed up in order to make sure that each player was able to get credit for all 6 of their drives.  In additional to fun round of disc golf, it also required strategic planning for future holes that would tailor to each team member’s strengths and weaknesses.

In order to provided an added level of craziness to the mix, the team scores from the three headed monster event carried over into the singles round that followed lunch in order to count toward the over all score. Team Kris-Reece-Steven ended up taking first place in the team event, and went into the singles round with a -1 stroke lead on the rest of the field.

Even with the stroke lead going into the second round, Kris, Reece, and Steven were unable to maintain their three way tie for first throughout the round. Houston’s Disc Golf Underground vice president, Tyson, was able to come back from behind, and finish the day in first place by two strokes over the nearest golfers.

Following the singles round, we were able to swap tags based on the combined stroke totals from the team round and singles round. Two new golfers were introduced to the Disc Golf Underground, and the usual post-tournament games were had, DGU style. Ring of fire (both with the traditional putting hand, as well as the opposite hand), off-hand distance competition, and CTPs allowed many players to leave the event with new plastic in hand.

All in all, it was a great day on the course. Even though it was really wet, and 45-50ish degrees the whole day, we were not rained on, and smiles and friendships were made. Be sure to meet up with us at our next Disc Golf Underground event, the Vibram Birdie Bash at Windwood DGC on February 28, 2015 in Houston, Texas.
